Kårehamn Offshore Wind Farm

Project Challenge

Subsea Energy Solutions were informed by EON Climate & Renewables & MCWare Mechanical that the Kårehamn offshore wind farm had an urgent requirement for a bespoke gasket to be installed upon fabricated stillages onboard the vessel MPI Discovery.

The 5 mm thick gaskets were to be designed for a static nacelle weight of 157 Te and dynamic contact pressure to due to vessel motion and a bolt torque of upto 35 Mpa (max).

Subsea Energy Solutions were informed the nacelle gaskets must be delivered to the vessel for installation within 3 weeks from first project communication.

Subsea Energy Solutions project challenge was to select best suitable polyurethane material for the extreme operating conditions despite the fact that all existing industry data only justified 1/3rd of the loadings required.

Project Solution

Subsea Energy Solutions set to work analysing mechanical data and selecting most suitable probable material.

Test samples were produced and a load test procedure developed to best represent the offshore scenario.

The test samples were load tested at a third party load testing house and subject to extreme loadings.

Subsea Energy Solutions were contracted to provide the following equipment and services;

  1. Supply 08-off (32-off quadrants) bespoke nacelle gaskets.

  2. On-site installation of gaskets and associated site services.

Project Outcome

All equipment and accompanying documentation were delivered to vessel MPI Discovery on the date as required by client.

Equipment was successfully installed on the vessel and mobilised.

All equipment performed within the specified tolerances during its in-life use, as such the project was considered 100 % successful by all parties concerned.
