Thanet Offshore Wind Farm

Project Challenge

Subsea Energy Solutions were informed by Vattenfall & K2 Management that the Thanet offshore wind
farm export cable was to be recovered and replaced requiring a fully bespoke cable protection system.

Subsea Energy Solutions were informed the cable protection system must be delivered to the quayside for
mobilisation within 2.5 weeks from first project communication.

Subsea Energy Solutions project challenge was three fold;

  1. Design new method to protect export cable either side of export cable joint box from over bending

  2. Design new j-tube centraliser & bend restrictor adaptor to interface with existing bend restrictor solution

  3. Design lifting quadrant counter weight solution to facilitate controlled deployment from vessel
Project Solution

Subsea Energy Solutions set to work producing preliminary sketches for approval by all parties concerned.

Upon receipt of approval a 2 week project schedule remained for detailed design, manufacture and supply.

With respect to the export cable joint box, the revolutionary cable protection system would prevent the
exposed export cable either side of joint box from over bending and potential ultimate failure during
deployment from the vessel to a pre-determined position / touch-down window on the seabed.

Subsea Energy Solutions were contracted to provide the following equipment;

  1. Supply 4.4 m export cable joint protection bridge c/w bend restrictor adaptors & 2 x 5 m bend restrictor

  2. Supply 14” j-tube centraliser c/w bend restrictor adaptor to interface with existing bend restrictor solution

  3. Supply 1.2 Te lifting quadrant counter weight balance solutions
Project Outcome

All equipment and accompanying documentation were delivered to quayside on the date & hour as required
by client.

All equipment was mobilised, installed on the vessel and deployed subsea with one minor telcon
clarification being required by client.

All project equipment was successfully deployed on the seabed in exactly the correct position.

The ultimate objective of the operation was to ensure the Thanet offshore wind farm could once again
supply wind generated electricity to the mainland United Kingdom via the onshore substation.

Project was considered 100% successful by all parties concerned.
