Our unique Subflex™ Cable Protection System offers many unrivalled and unparalleled technical and commercial features. Subsea Energy Solutions have sought industry advice during development of the Subflex™ Cable Protection System and have taken into consideration many requirements such as purchase cost, rapid offshore assembly, rapid installation, rapid burial, enhanced cable protection, elimination of maintenance requirements, standardisation of components to name just a small selection of features.

Offshore windfarm cable installation is a high cost / high insurance claims theatre and it is well documented that 70% of insurance claims from wind farm operators relate to cable damage. Subsea Energy Solutions have engineered Subflex™ to be the most cost effective and fit for purpose Cable Protection System available in the market today, meticulously ironing out the problems suffered from other available systems through focused and thorough design processes whilst providing new and innovative features to the cable protection industry.

Cable Protection Components

Our cable protection components are designed specifically to eliminate damage to the subsea cable through impact, abrasion and over bending throughout the duration of its lifespan. Please find below details of the cable protection products we currently manufacture as part of the Subflex™ system. A Vertebrae Bend Restrictor (VBR) usually comprises a number of interlocking elements which articulate when subject to an external load and lock together to form a smooth curved "locking" radius. This radius is chosen to be equal to or greater than the minimum bend radius of the pipe that it is applied to. Once the elements have locked together the bending moment present is transferred into the elements and back through a specially designed steel interface structure into the adjacent rigid connection, therefore protecting the pipe / cable from potentially damaging loads.

Flexible pipes, flowlines, power cables and umbilicals are usually connected to a rigid structure such as a subsea riser base, PLEM or wellhead. To prevent these pipes from overbending at the interface between flexible and rigid structures, Vertebrae Bending Restrictors are often installed on the pipe. The VBR is specifically used where static or quasi-static loads act on a pipe, rather than dynamic loads when a Bending Stiffener would be more suited.

We are able to offer either a bespoke design or make use of a vast array of existing designs of bending restrictor elements to suit a wide range of pipes, umbilicals and cables. We are also able to design and manufacture the steel interface structure required.

Designed to provide a highly impact resistant shell to subsea cables and umbilicals, our protective ducting system comprises of a series of interlocking half shells, each moulded from marine grade Subthane™ Polyurethane. Each of the interlocking sections can be assembled with ease on deck prior to deployment, and are held in place using subsea banding. Our ducting systems can also be designed to allow for pipe and cable standoff requirements as well as added weight to provide additional ballast where required.

SUB-BSR-D™ Bend Stiffener Dynamic are highly engineered to provide a pre-defined stiffness to a cable or umbilical at its point of connection to a rigid structure or other system component. Its primary function is to limit the bending stresses in the line at its most vulnerable point, thus removing the potential for damage at the line connection as a result of over bending. Our Bend Stiffener components can be engineered for use in both static and dynamic environments. Products designed for use in dynamic environments whereby the bending load is likely to alter throughout the products installation are engineered to include significant anti-fatugue properties, thus removing any failure potential of the product throughout its lifespan.

Cable Termination

As part of the Subflex™ system, we offer two types of termination product, these being standard J-Tube sealing for use where a J-Tube is present at the base of the monopile and J-Tubeless where cable entry is directly into the monopile. SUB-SEAL™ J-tube Seals are used to seal the interface between the umbilical / flexible riser and the inside of a J-Tube, incorporating a water tight seal in which an anti corrosion inhibitor is often introduced, our J-tube seals offer both diverless and diver installed solutions. Manufactured from high marine grade Subthane™ Polyurethane and of split shell, modular construction, our J-tube seal solutions allow ease of installation. Typically the seal will be combined with a centraliser arrangement, designed to accurately position the cable within the J-tube during the pull-in process.

Suitable for terminations where a J-tube is not present, our J-tubeless sealing solutions provide a watertight seal directly between the pile-hole and the umbilical / riser. Using our patented SUBFLEX™ termination technology, our J-tubeless seals provide diver-less installation with activation taking place during the pull in process.
